Harvest time is the perfect time for a Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! Garden Storytime. Hold storytime right in the garden—amongst the vegetables and flowers. Don’t forget–there are three books about bunnies tippy-ing through Mr. McGreely’s life. Read all three!
- Take time to ask for predictions about what steps Mr. McGreely might take next to keep his flop-eared friends out of his garden/home/day.
- Encourage your hearers to read the words “tippy-tippy-tippy” and “Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!” with you.
- Leave plenty of time to look at the pictures—what makes up the sandcastle… whose ears are poking out of the basket…who’s hiding and where?
- Wonder at the ridiculous lengths Mr. McGreely will go to….
Activities
- Have a bunny treasure-hunt in the garden—hide bunny tales (cotton balls) in and around the plants. Encourage the children to be gentle around the plants, but see how many bunnies they can find.
- Learn to draw a simple bunny—there are many examples on-line. Or, if your listeners are very young, provide a bunny for them to color or a pre-cut bunny to decorate with whiskers and a puffy tail etc.
- Plant some seeds in the garden—a cool weather crop, perhaps, or seeds in a cup that can grow in a window sill if temperatures are falling.
- Draw simple bunny faces on little fingers—have those finger-bunnies tippy-tippy-tap along with you as you read the story.
Munchas!
- Make a bunny salad! Or harvest and prepare all the veggies bunnies like and have a taste test. Serve veggies and dip or a salad with salad dressing. Encourage lots of muncha muncha noises while everyone eats.
- Serve bunny tails—roll balls of ice cream in coconut and freeze.
